Transcript from the LASIK online chat on September 24, 2008 with Roni M. Shtein, M.D. and refractive surgery technician Catherine Huebner, C.O.A. Due to the nature of online communications, the transcript below provides brief and general answers to questions about LASIK surgery. The information is not intended to serve as a medical consultation and it is not designed to replace a physician’s judgment about an individual’s suitability for a specific refractive surgery procedure. We encourage our patients to bring a list of questions to their screening appointment. The information below may help you create your own list.
Dr. Shtein: Good afternoon. Does anyone have any questions?
Question: I have the usual questions regarding cost to UM employees.
Lasik Technician: The cost for the screening appointment is $95.00, the cost for surgery ranges from $1,500-$2,200 depending on the procedure.
Dr. Shtein: Welcome - does anyone have any questions?
Question: What risks are involved in bladeless lasik?
Dr. Shtein: The "bladeless surgery" means that we use a laser for flap creation as well as for the LASIK treatment. This substantially reduces the risk of a complication from flap creation, but the other potential risks of surgery still exist. During your screening appointment, we will review potential risks to help you decide whether refractive surgery is right for you. After the procedure, most patients can see well enough without their glasses or contact lenses to perform all daily activities, including driving. However, people over the age of 40 may need to wear reading glasses after the procedure. The most common complications are under- and over-correction, which can be successfully treated. You will have a good idea about what to expect after the ophthalmologist has reviewed all of the screening tests with you. Other risks associated with laser refractive surgery are ry eyes, glare and halos, infection, scarring, and decreased vision.
Question: Is this the discounted price for employees? Is this per eye or for both?
Lasik Technician: This is the price for U of M employees, The cost is per eye. You can also do payroll deduct for one year if you would like.

Dr. Shtein: It's hard to know if there is a procedure that might be helpful without seeing you for an evaluation/screening appointment. LASIK and similar surgeries can only be performed for stable
Question: prescriptions. I've always had a bad astigmatism, what procedure is usually recommended to correct this?
